Bundles per square

Standard asphalt shingles are often 3 bundles per square.

Waste percentage

Use more waste on roofs with valleys, dormers, or complex cuts.

Bundle count results

The calculator converts the area into roofing squares, adds waste, and rounds the order to full bundles.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

Enter the roof area you already have, whether that number is in square feet, roofing squares, or square meters.

  2. 2

Type the bundle coverage for the shingle product you are pricing, then add a waste percentage that fits the roof complexity.

  3. 3

Use the adjusted area, roofing squares, and rounded bundle count as your ordering baseline before adding ridge, starter, or accessory items.

How the math works

Area conversion

The calculator first converts the input area into square feet. Roofing squares are simply 100 square feet each, while square meters are converted using the standard 10.7639 factor.

Waste adjustment

Waste is applied before the bundle count: base area x (1 + waste%). That way valleys, cuts, and starter material are reflected in the final quantity.

Bundle formula

Estimated bundles = adjusted roofing squares x bundles per square, then rounded up. That matches how roofing suppliers actually sell bundles.

When to increase bundles per square

Specialty products, heavy laminated shingles, and some designer profiles may not use the standard 3 bundles per square. If your manufacturer spec differs, enter the exact packaging number here.

FAQ

FAQ

How many bundles per square should I use?

Three bundles per square is common for standard architectural shingles, but supplier packaging varies. This shingle bundle calculator lets you type the exact bundles per square used by your brand.

Can I enter squares or square meters instead of square feet?

Yes. The roofing bundle calculator accepts square feet, roofing squares, or square meters, then converts everything into the same shingle ordering output.

Why does the calculator round bundles up?

Bundles are sold as whole units. Even if your math lands between bundle counts, you still need to order enough material to cover the full roof with waste included.

Should waste be included in bundle counts?

Yes. Valleys, rakes, starter, ridge, and offcuts all affect the total. Add your waste factor before calculating bundle quantity so ordering reflects the actual install condition.
